The Chemicals Act obliges the federal states to designate information and treatment centers for poisonings, which collect and evaluate findings on the health effects of hazardous substances or dangerous preparations and provide assistance through advice and treatment in the case of substance-related illnesses.

The Joint Poison Information Centre (GGIZ) fulfills the tasks of the poison control hotline for the participating countries on the basis of an administrative agreement.

It was established in January 1994 at the Erfurt Medical School and, following its transformation, continued at the HELIOS Clinic. The GGIZ's mission is to provide 24-hour assistance in cases of acute and chronic poisoning and its consequences in humans.

Where possible, advice is also provided on cases of animal poisoning. This advice is available to all citizens, doctors, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals, as well as to authorities and institutions dealing with toxicological issues.

The findings regarding poisonings are documented and published. The GGIZ works closely with other poison information and treatment centers, the Society for Clinical Toxicology, and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. Since April 2004, the night shift has been shared on a daily rotating basis with the GIZ-Nord (Göttingen).
